24 Hours in Split

The city of Split is a true Croatian gem next to the Adriatic Sea. With delicious food, and centuries- or even millennia-old architecture, it is not surprising that it has become one of the most popular European destinations in the last 5 years. Owing to Split's coastal location, some unfortunately see the city primarily as a gateway to the islands of Brač and Hvar, and might only spend a day here. Although I would strongly advise against such a short visit, here is a day guide to give you an idea of the best things to do in Split.

MORNING

Breakfast – All kinds of delicious pancakes and pastries can be found in the old town by the main harbour (Brasserie on 7 is a personal favourite) – A distinctly Mediterranean way to start the day’s adventures...

Diocletian’s Palace – This is undoubtedly the best-known attraction in Split. Protected by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, this home of a one-time Roman Emperor forms about half of the old town. You will need the whole morning to explore the palace. Make sure you don’t miss Diocletian’s cellars, the Cathedral, or the Mestrovic sculptures. Everything is beautifully preserved.

Top Tip: Don’t forget to grab a map of the palace from the visitor’s centre, you’ll need it!

AFTERNOON

Lunch - Split has always been a city that, unlike much of Croatia, prefers fish over meat. Its seafood restaurants are outstanding and numerous. For an afternoon meal, I would suggest a visit to Restaurant Nostromo. Do try the Branzino fillet with cauliflower purée, accompanied by a local white wine – Light, fresh and oh-so delicious.

After satisfying your appetite, the best way to spend your afternoon is to wander around the old town and spontaneously explore whatever catches your eye. Personally, I would suggest a visit to Split’s Ethnographic Museum, which offers a fascinating insight into daily life in the region in centuries past (also it’s very cool inside, just what you need on a hot day!)

Top Tip: Upon arrival in Split, get a ‘Split Card’ from one of the many Tourist Information Centres. This will provide you with discounts at the majority of museums and galleries.

EVENING

Dinner - The huge promenade that runs across the front of Dicoletian’s Palace by the main harbour is the place to go for a pre-dinner drink. You’ll find an abundance of delightful bars offering delicious and unique cocktails, all with those lovely sea views. For dinner, Konoba Marjan is one of the many hidden gems just outside the old town. The menu here is dictated by the day’s catches, and so it is no surprise that you are served the freshest and most delicious of fish. The grilled sea bream in particular, accompanied by vegetables, is sensational. Afterwards, head back to the harbour (just a short stroll) and grab a gelato from one the many stalls – the dolcelatte and dark chocolate flavours are certainly worth a try!

Top Tip: For Konoba Marjan, try and book early to ensure a table outside along the atmospheric, cobbled street. Also, take their wine recommendations with the food, they know exactly what works!

NIGHT

Perhaps time to head back to one of our lovely villas on the Split Riviera? (see right!)
