This guide is intended as a bitesize introduction to the
island of Sardinia. Last year the island was in vogue in a big way and we
expect it to be popular again in 2017. It goes without saying, if you want the
perfect villa on the perfect dates for you, book early!
So WHY Sardinia?
There is a list of course, but right at the top, we say
avoiding the busy mainland and having a more exclusive break away from the
masses and still get your ‘Italy fix’ is at the top.
Beaches: some of Europes finest. Close your eyes and twiddle your toes in the
white sand and you may well believe you are in the Caribbean.
Restaurants: we all love Italian food and Sardinia does it well. We suggest
pasta dishes like Spaghetti con Bottarga (with grey mullet roe on top), a
gnocchi equivalent called Malloreddus but with a hint of saffron and served
with a tomato sauce or the famous Culingiones ravioli, little parcels filled
with mouthwatering spinach and cheese.
Other additions to your table could well include pecorino
cheese, snails, spiced octopus or spiny artichokes. For beverages to help wash
your feast down, a Vermentino white wine or Cannonau red are perfect accompaniments.
WHEN then…?
If you can, May and June are perfect. July and August are
the most popular months but it can get very hot (NB being booked into a villa
with private pool and air con can help!) We suggest avoiding winter, the island
can get windswept and most things are closed up.
WHERE to stay?
The island offers so much you can take your pick, but we love
the north of the island, especially in the Porto Cervo area. Well served by
airports and airlines, its easy to get to and has fabulous beaches. Find plenty
to do, especially watersports in the area. The famous Costa Smerelda – a 20 kms
stretch of beach, golf clubs, private jet and helicopter routes and where the
glitterati do their thing – will not fail to please.
